South African National Anthem, 1897. South African Enoch mankayi Sontaga expressed many Africans' dream of independence in his song "Bless O Lord, Our Land of Africa." It expressed Africa's growing nationalism, a feeling of pride in one's homeland. Many African leaders worked to create unity through nationalism to oppose European rule.
