Overview of Module Nineteen
Module Nineteen is an introduction to the history, geography, culture, society, production, and forces of social change in East Africa. Students will learn how this region of the world fits together as a geographical region while also seeing its connectedness to other regions of Africa and the world throughout its history. This module will explore the diversity within East Africa in terms of history, geography, culture, religion, economics, politics, health, and social positions in society. Specifically, the activities in this module will include:
The Region Called East Africa: countries included in East Africa;
history of East Africa; and
discussion of intra-regional organizations.
The Geography of East Africa: differences between the vegetation,
water availability,
topography, and population density in the Horn of Africa, the Great Lakes
region,
and islands in the Indian Ocean; and the impact of tourism on the East African
environment.
Culture, Society, and Production in East Africa: the cultural and
religious diversity of East
Africa; the economy of East Africa; understanding ethnic and gender inequities
in East Africa.
HIV/AIDS and Social Change in East Africa: the impact of HIV/AIDS
on East African
societies; the case of Uganda as an example of an East African country that
has been successful in reducing its percentage of HIV/AIDS infected people.
