Notes:

*  The classifications given in this column are subjective.  We recognize that there are no “pure” economic systems.  Moreover, during the past forty years of independence a number of African countries have shifted economic orientation.  For example, Mozambique and Tanzania were until the early 1990s exemplars of state oriented economies.  In the 1990s they have moved towards embracing some aspects of free enterprise.  Similarly, Cote d’Ivoire moved from a free enterprise to a mixed economic system during this same period.

** Since these countries have experienced sever civil strife during the past decade it is difficult to classify the economies of these countries.
