Luba-Lunda kingdoms (the Congo), 17th century. By this time, the Luba-Lunda states had spread into the southern Congo Basin, western Angola, and Zambia. This enabled them to trade with the Swahili Arabs on the East Coast of Africa and the Portuguese on the Atlantic Coast. The kingdoms continued to flourish until late in the 19th century, when the British colonized them.
