The Island of Goree (Senegal), 1444 CE. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to come to the Island of Goree, which is located off the coast of today’s Senegal. They built a series of forts, which later became a slave dungeon. African slaves were exported to the New World from this dungeon for over three hundred years from 1536 to 1884.
