Module Twenty Six

Tanzania

Overview:

 The purpose of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to study in depth one country in contemporary Africa. In addition to providing students with learning activities that will enhance their general knowledge and understanding of the history, geography, societies and cultures of Tanzania, this module will thoroughly address two very important issues in Tanzania, both past and present: 1) the growing tourist industry and its impact on the environment and people Tanzania; 2) Tanzania’s global connections through networks of trade and cultural exchange across the Indian Ocean.

The learning activities are designed to be used sequentially. However, each activity can be engaged on its own. Completion of the entire unit will take approximately three 50 minute class periods.

Focus Questions

  1. What kinds of geological features (waterways, land, mountains) does Tanzania have and how does this impact the country’s people and economy?
  2. What is the history of this region and how did it come to be the modern day country of Tanzania?
  3. What links does Tanzania maintain with the rest of the world (through tourism, trade, etc.) and how do these links contribute to its diversity?

Objectives:

After completing this module, students will have:

  1. A clearer understanding of the geography, history, and cultures of Tanzania.
  2. An appreciation for the history of this part of East Africa and a better understanding of how Tanzania came to be the country it is today.
  3. The ability to assess the factors that have led to change in Tanzania.
  4. The ability to think more critically about social, economic and environmental processes within Tanzania.
