Activity One
Five Quick Words: Image Activity - Engage
Take out a sheet of paper and think about the word "Africa". What five words come to mind when you think of "Africa"?
After jotting down your ideas, your teacher will ask you to share them with the class. Were there many similarities between your answers and those of your classmates?
After the writing activity is complete, please place your list in your Exploring Africa Workbook.
Teacher Discussion:
Following the writing activity, you can ask the students to share their responses with the class and categorize the responses on the board.
Possible categories include:
- People
- Animals
- Environment
- History
- Politics
- Economics
If one of the categories has more entries than the other categories, you might point this out. For example, if many of the students answer “animals,” you might ask, “Why do we think of animals when we think of Africa?” You might select some of the entries and begin a discussion of why students choose those particular words. Sample follow-up questions include: Do they come from media images? From discussions with family and friends? From books that you have read?
This discussion should be brief; it will be returned to on the following day.
